Hacking Covfefe
Politics • Education • Writing
So I am Brian Hack and rather frustrated with the covfefe of just general knowledge and wisdom. Why are we being limited in our tech, education, politics, medicine, and many other fields? Hopefully, I can find a kind of Linux-like kernel to better interface with reality better than what we currently can in 2021.

Network News Transfer Protocol

[Not the best worded but, hey, it was something I broached in a 150 character superchat on RekietaLaw's 2/3/22 livestream]

btw the "NNTP [blah blah] a low-tech solution". What is it a low-tech solution to? The whole Big Tech, Big Media, Twitter, Social Media conundrum of getting actual news

It is as ancient of a protocol of the Internet as TCP-IP, UDP, HTTP, the email protocial, all that.

I have no clue where to make an NNTP server however there are NNTP clients to read "newsgroups" and interact on them, I believe.

If someone made an app, and there were a bunch of servers, then say local news could put be placed on servers for a particular town or city. And someone could look through the text of it. Do the data mining, all that.

Streamers, youtubers, content creators could put their opinions on issues on there or give out announcements, probably.

The way it works is that there is a centralized place (the original server that hosts the newsgroup) and then a decentralized network of servers that download the newsgroup content. As such, especially with the low data of text, even if there were lots of traffic for a particular newsgroup... the servers could handle it

So if a grassroots movement could get one locality to install a server for NNTP, they could give official and unofficial commentary (news) on what is currently occurring event-wise or things which happen.

(Also, that server could have a web server on it, or some governmental action stuff. Could help make self-governance easier using the server that is installed.)

That way, those that want to be serious enough to be alert to news do not have to watch the "news" from 6-7pm for 2 seconds of actual news. Nor do they have to find that one good article in 30 pages of awkwardly folded "newspapers". ... They could actually pay attention to this low bandwidth way of giving and getting news

Surely, if there is an app, that app could have markup (like HTML uses) to embed photo links or videos to "spice up" the news or whatever

.... Low-tech solution to Big Tech, Big Media, all that, because it replaces the server farms of Big Tech as well as coalesces news rooms to the locality which cares about it unlike Big News. And it can beat Big Social Media by the same thing.

It was used this way in the past which is why NNTP exists. However, when normal non-techie people got on (fucking normies), newsgroups fell out of wide-spread favor (still around today but mostly normies use the USENET servers for getting torrents and sharing pirated stuff)

......... Highly unlikely that even if I pitched it well that anything would change. I would have to actually code the app myself, figure out the NNTP server thing, actually buy the servers and position the IT departments to maintain them in each and every locality, and then pay people to use and promote it before it actually could achieve the potential it has and the need we have for free speech

But hey, that is the low-tech solution. ... much like keeping 2G and 3G cell towers for US Cellular to support the rural areas whereas TMobile, Verizon, and AT&T want to remove them and shut them down in favor of 5G

Summing up nuclear war

If Putin were truly a madman, then he would go for a pre-emptive strike which has always been in line with Russian nuclear doctrine.

America has always equivocated that it would never launch a pre-emptive strike which is why we have a range of nuclear deterrence.

Still. A tactical nuke could be attempted and might be deemed worth the consequences depending on how far sanctions go.

Locals is pretty good for speaking freely. Was a nice chat with RekietaLaw during his call-in. Not exactly my envisioned future but, hey, it's silly and it's nice that America is able to allow people to chat like this once again.

:)

Something from January 2020

I wrote this up after my trip to South Korea trying to find a solution to the North Korea situation.

Wrote it up on January 18th, 2020. And then the world freaked out about Corona, among other things (cough America was busy impeaching its president cough)

"I am recovering from a nasty cold I picked up from my travels" ... Oh really, 2020 Brian, what is it that you were ill from? Excuse me, but you are canceled for not recognizing Corona as the worse plague ever to accurse the Earth. ... Looks like I actually was America's patient zero.
